Making Safety Fun – Tanjung Bin’s HSSE Day Cultivates Teamwork, Healthy Lifestyle & Work Safety Awareness

Malakoff’s Tanjung Bin Complex held its HSSE Day celebration on 11 and 12 November 2018 at Tanjung Bin Power Plant, Pontian, Johor. The event, which carried the theme “Healthy Workplace and Lifestyle” was aimed to promote safety practices at the work place.

In his opening speech, Plant Manager of Tanjung Bin Power Plant (TBPP), En. Mohd Kopli Yunus emphasised on the importance of complying with the safety guidelines imposed on every staff and reminded them to prioritise health and safety above all else.

“We want to ensure that safety is not only practiced at the work place, but it becomes part and parcel of their daily lives,” explained En. Mohd Kopli.

Aligned with HSSE’s theme for this year, the list of activities organised is largely aimed to nurture a healthy work-life balance among the staff such as fun ride, fishing competition, housekeeping and e-games besides the exhibition booths set up in the vicinity of the Complex.

This year, the event was spread across two days as the number of activities had been increased since the previous year due to the overwhelming support from the participants, comprised of not only Malakoff staff, but also the local community.

Day 1 on the HSSE Day celebration started off with the Tanjung Bin Complex HSSE Fun Ride, aimed at promoting a healthy lifestyle, was flagged off by En. Mohd Kopli. The ride was opened to all and attracted a total of 170 cyclists from Tanjung Bin and the local cycling teams namely Tayomox Fatbike, Pontian Cycling Team, UCT, Kobra MTB, Flex Riders, OJCT, KTB, Geng Jawa Ranger and Team S3 Cycling.

A participant from Pontian Cycling Team, Mohd. Hisyam, applauded this initiative. He admitted that his team joined the event because it was organised by Malakoff and was one of the most anticipated cycling events of the year.

“This is also a great platform for outsiders like us to connect with the people from Tanjung Bin as the latter played a significant role in our community.”

In the meantime, a fishing competition was held at the Lafarge Jetty with 80 participants consisting of staff across TBPP and Tanjung Bin Energy Power Plant (TBEPP). Known as a sport that requires great patience and determination, even the hot scorching sun could not hamper the participants’ spirit to win a great catch.

First place was won by Nakiudin with a 1.39 kg catch, followed by Azizul and Shafif in second and third places respectively with a 1.05 kg and a 0.75 kg catch.

Day 2 had an energising start with an hour of aerobics and Zumba dance led by trainers from Smart Gym Pontian to keep the TBPP and TBEPP staff’s adrenaline going for the day’s planned activities.

Later, everyone proceeded to its highlight of the day - a housekeeping activity in a bid to foster a work culture that is clean, healthy and conducive, and to support the 5s Campaign (Sorting, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain)  that’s currently being implemented in Malakoff. Staff were tasked to collect and dispose rubbish and unwanted items found around the building’s vicinity and re-organise items in their working areas.

The staff also had the opportunity to reminisce their younger days by enjoying a host of indoor games such as ‘batu seremban’, ‘congkak’ and e-Games inside the Admin building.

Exhibition booths were also set up by in-house contractors such as Turcomp, Benteng Prestu, MCIE, JMLM, IPSM, MSAA and Boiler Master to create awareness on occupational health and safety issues at work and staff were able to participate in quizzes to test their knowledge on the subject.

The day concluded with a prize-giving ceremony by Head, O&M and Commercial, Local Generation Division, Abdul Halim Adnan to all winners of the Tanjung Bin inter-plant sports competition which included badminton, futsal and football that were held prior to the event.

Congratulations to TBEPP for being the overall inter-plant sports champion!
