30th December 2022 marked the date where one of Malakoff Corporation Berhad’s (“Malakoff”) longest-running power plants, GB3 Power Plant (“GB3”) in Lumut, Perak officially ceased operations following the expiry of its 21-year Power Purchase Agreement (“PPA”) with TNB. The power plant, with a 640 MW generating capacity, first commenced operations in December 2001 in an open-cycle mode before being converted into a Combined-Cycle plant in November 2002.

As a gesture to commemorate the service and dedication displayed by all GB3 staff throughout the years, Lumut Power Plant (“LPP”) organised a Staff Appreciation Hi-Tea for all LPP staff and in-house contractors on 29th December 2022 at the LPP Club House.

Attended by Plant Manager of LPP Encik Lan Sulkaimy bin Md Yusof, LPP Department Heads, LPP Section Heads and all 160 LPP staff as well as in-house contractors, the event began with a ‘doa’ recitation before proceeding to individual speeches from the engineers and specialists. It was indeed a trip down memory lane as many reminisced their journey with the plant and expressed their gratitude for all the experiences and memories built over the years. It was a bittersweet session for all as they were reminded of their career journey while at the plant and all the friendships formed during their tenure.

The event then proceeded with a moving video presentation on GB3’s time capsule followed by a handover of a token of appreciation to all GB3 staff by Encik Lan Sulkaimy.

“Although we knew the date was getting closer, we still couldn’t anticipate the overwhelming emotions that would engulf our feelings when the actual day to cease all operations arrived. It has been a whirlwind of a 21-year journey for this plant. It has seen many successes and recovered from many outages which have provided invaluable experiences for all of us. This plant would not have thrived if it wasn’t for the people who worked tirelessly and relentlessly to ensure it was running without any disruption to ultimately provide its service to the Nation,” said Encik Lan Sulkaimy in his speech.

“Today we celebrate YOU, our GB3 staff. Thank you for your service!”.

A scrumptious spread of food was set for everyone to enjoy while being in each other’s company one last time before the event ended with a group photo session. On behalf of #TeamMalakoff, we would like to say thank you to all GB3 staff, then and now, for your service in powering the Nation.
