On 21 October 2023, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (“Malakoff”) planted 2,000 mangrove trees along the Sungai Pulai Mukim Sungai Karang bridge in Pontian, Johor as part of its contribution towards ‘The Planting of 181,000 Mangrove Trees in One Day Programme’ organised by the Pontian District Office, Johor. Held in conjunction with the National Environment Day that falls on the 21st of October of every year, the event was aimed inculcating awareness on the importance of environmental conservation among Malaysians and encouraging the act of tree planting.
The event was officiated by Pegawai Daerah Pontian Yang Berusaha Tuan Haji Zainal bin Eran and attended by ADUN Benut Yang Berhormat Dato' Ir. Hasni bin Mohammad and ADUN Kukup Yang Berhormat Senator Dato' Haji Jefridin bin Haji Atan alongside other representatives from other companies that had also collaborated with the Pontian District Office for the same purpose.
Mangroves play a vital role in protecting the environmental from extreme weather changes and significantly contributes to protecting the coastline from erosion. For communities who reside in areas close to bodies of water, growing a mangrove forest is essential to maintain quality water to be consumed as it traps sediments and filter pollutants that originate from activities in the surrounding areas. Mangroves also serve as the breeding grounds for various ocean-life species.
Malakoff is no stranger to environmental conservation initiatives. In 2013, we planted 8,000 mangrove saplings in Seberang Perai, Pulau Pinang as part of the third phase of the company’s Mangrove Rehabilitation Project which was aimed at restoring the eroding ecosystem in the coastal region. Prior to that, 20,000 saplings were also planted in Mukim Serkat, Johor, adjacent to Malakoff’s Tanjung Bin Power Plant, while another 17,000 were planted in Tanjung Piai and Pulau Kukup National Parks.
This collaboration is part of Malakoff’s commitment to environmental conservation, where we establish impactful partnerships for our Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) programmes, providing education and creating awareness on the importance of collective efforts in safeguarding the environment. It also aligns with the UN SDG Goal No. 14 – Life Below Water which aims to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development.
