Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) today launched the inaugural Malakoff-UTM Eco Run 2011 in partnership with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), aiming to draw a total of 1,400 athletes from across Malaysia. The race which is laid out in four distances of 21km, 15km, 10km and 5km, is scheduled to be held on 26 November 2011 at the university’s sports centre and offers prizes worth up to RM8,000 to the 50 winners.
Themed ‘Run For Eco Awareness’, this initiative is part of Malakoff’s flagship Corporate Social Responsibility platform, the Malakoff Community Partnerships. In line with its ecological theme, UTM has lined up a host of activities for participants a day prior to the run including talks on environment conservation as well as outdoor activities such as horse-riding, kayak and rowing machine.
Speaking at the launch, Yusop Rashid, the Head of Corporate Affairs and External Relations at Malakoff said, “We are very excited about our partnership with Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, which is in line with our aim to promote community participation in sports through our flagship CSR platform, the Malakoff Community Partnerships. Moreover, the eco-themed run is a great way to educate participants to appreciate and conserve our fragile ecosystem.”
The Malakoff-UTM Eco Run 2011 is also aimed at introducing running to people of various age groups and physical fitness to cultivate a passion for sporting excellence along with promoting a healthy lifestyle. The run comprises six categories including Open Category (21km distance, Men’s, age between 18 and 39 and Women’s, age between 18 and 34), Veteran Category (15km distance Men’s, age above 40 and Women’s, age above 35), Inter-Department Category (15km distance, Men’s and Women’s), Inter-University (15km distance, Men’s and Women’s), Youth Category (10km distance, Men’s and Women’s, age between 15 and 18) and Fun Run Category (5km distance, Men’s and Women’s).
Elaborating further on the event, Yusop said, “Apart from the monetary contribution, Malakoff will provide its fullest support and work hand-in-hand with UTM to ensure the race goes well. With Malakoff’s expertise in organising races, we aim to make the Malakoff-UTM Eco Run a staple event for Johor and reach out to encourage potential racers in the region.” “We are confident that given the support from the local athletes, the Malakoff-UTM Eco Run will be a grand success,” he added.
