Malakoff’s Prai Power Plant Wins NOSH Excellence Award 2017

15 November 2017

16 November 2017, Kuala Lumpur – Prai Power Plant (“PPP”), wholly-owned by Malakoff Corporation Berhad (“Malakoff”), today won the National Occupational Safety and Health (“NOSH”) Excellence Award 2017 for the Energy Facility category, from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (“DOSH”), under the Ministry of Human Resources, in a ceremony held at The Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpur.

The prestigious NOSH Excellence Award is a recognition at the national level for individuals, media, journalists and various organizations with excellent track records in its occupational health and safety practices at the workplace.

The awards comprise 27 categories whereby shortlisted nominees from all over Malaysia underwent vigorous audits by DOSH before they were named winners in their respective categories.

Ir. Mohd Raziff Embi, Plant Manager of PPP was humbled and honoured that the plant was selected as the winner this year. “I’m pleased to see that health and safety practices have become a second nature to the staff and that the efforts taken to uphold the best practices paid off. Besides applying it at work, they made it a habit to implement them everywhere they go, be it at the plant or at home.”

PPP always strives to follow the guidelines set by DOSH and endeavours to perform one step higher than the stated guidelines to ensure that it covered all aspects and possibilities.

At work, the morning meetings start with a briefing on health, safety and environment issues before proceeding to delegating tasks and addressing other arising matters. In addressing the safety concerns of staff at work, PPP has a 1 kilometer designated bicycle lane for staff from the Administration building to the process area. The roads surrounding the said areas were also made one-way for other vehicles to protect the safety of bicycle users.

Another notable initiative taken by PPP to ensure the staff’s health is taken care of is by having a wellness center within its vicinity. The wellness center is equipped with blood pressure and glucose monitoring devices and staff are given wellness passport where they are able to self-check and monitor their health progress. It also acts as an initial check point if they noticed a drop in their health condition before proceeding to see a doctor for further examination.

“This initiative enables the staff to be aware and interested in their own health. It also creates a support group where they encourage each other to lead a healthy lifestyle and avoid unhealthy habits such as smoking and having a sedentary lifestyle,” added Raziff.

Commenting on winning the award, Chief Executive Officer of Malakoff, YBhg. Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Kenali said, “This award is a recognition of our health and safety practices being implemented at our power plants. In addition to operating our power plants according to the industry’s standards and best practices, we have ensured health and safety best practices are well entrenched as part of our working culture.”

“At Malakoff, we take health and safety matters very seriously. We hold various health and safety awareness programmes across the Group as an effort to continuously emphasize on its importance at the workplace. Such programmes have also brought our staff together and created a deep sense of belonging and camaraderie amongst staff when they are actively involved in these activities,” he added.
