  • Malakoff champions turtle conservation

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff champions turtle conservation 18 July 2012 After a refreshing morning downpour, the sun burst through the clouds to brightly welcome some 100 participants comprising Malakoff staff, students and teachers from the Company’s adopted schools, namely, Sekolah Kebangsaan Segari, Sekolah Kebangsaan (C) Pei Min and Sekolah Kebangsaan Tamil Ladang Huntly. This year, we were pleased to invite one additional school, Sekolah Agama Rakyat, to join in this day-long programme at the Turtle and Marine Ecosystem Centre (TUMEC) over in Pasir Panjang, Lumut. Organised for the second consecutive year in line with the World Wildlife Fund Malaysia’s call to safeguard the turtles, this ‘Kenali Penyu, Sayangi Penyu’ has become an integral part of Malakoff Corporation Berhad’s ongoing efforts at environment conservation under its flagship Corporate Social Responsibility platform – the Malakoff Community Partnerships. After receiving goodie bags containing stationery sets, foldable water bottles and solar LED lights and after the hearty breakfast on-site, the children could barely sit still through the customary welcome speeches and mock cheque presentation! Speaking at the event, En. Abdul Rahman Hussin, Plant Manager of Lumut Power Plant for Malakoff said, “Malakoff recognises the importance of turtle conservation given that their numbers are dwindling at such an alarming rate. As such, we are taking concrete steps to play our part as an active and responsible participant of the local community in conservation efforts which support these species of turtles.” “I am especially pleased with the enthusiastic commitment shown by our participants today. It is important for more Corporations and individuals to collaborate as well as contribute towards turtle conservation in Malaysia,” he added. During the programme, a series of awareness activities including a colouring and photography contest were lined up to encourage participants to better understand and champion this turtle conservation cause. In addition, participants also attended an educational talk conducted by TUMEC which highlighted the important part individuals can play in conserving turtles. This was followed by a tour of the premises where they got to see the different types of turtles which come to these shores – namely the Olive Ridley Turtle and the Green Turtle species. The highlight of the programme was the actual release of baby turtles into the sea. These students were given the rare opportunity to hold young hatchlings in their hands before an emotional send-off that saw the baby turtles disappear from the shoreline, into the open sea. Also present at this event was Tuan Haji Sani Mohd Isa, Director of the Perak Fisheries Department, who shared, “I would like to commend Malakoff for its commitment towards turtle conservation by its championing this event for the second consecutive year. I hope that more Corporations will follow Malakoff’s proactive measures to protect Malaysia’s marine turtle species.” Norhafizah bt Abdul Halim, a Standard Five student of Sekolah Kebangsaan Segari, one Malakoff’s adopted schools, added, “I have learnt so much about turtles today and some of the ways we can safeguard these endangered species. It was a very special moment for me to hold a baby turtle for the first time before releasing it to the open sea.” “Today’s event has made me realise how important it is to start taking action to help conserve these turtles because their decline in numbers is irreversible. I will definitely share what I have learnt today with my friends and help spread awareness of this cause.” Malakoff also sponsored the installation of additional information boards in both English and Bahasa Malaysia, around TUMEC to better educate visitors on the importance of turtle conservation. Apart from this, new signboards and a gazebo were also put up to offer greater convenience to tourists visiting the Centre. Regretfully, the leatherbacks of Rantau Abang are not the only ones facing extinction. The Olive Ridleys and Green Turtles which come to these shores of Perak, Penang and Malacca are also in danger of disappearing from our planet. “Turtle conservation efforts in Perak are still not widely known. Malaysians can certainly do more if they are aware about how important it is to protect these sea creatures,” added En. Sani. Thank you to all our young friends, teachers and Malakoff volunteers, for both their time and resources. Let’s keep sharing and taking positive action so that generations to come can continue to see and touch these graceful, beautiful turtles.

Ustaz Haslin, with his talk titled ‘Secebis Hidayah, Menggapai Maghfirah’, was good-humoured and knowledgeable. He started by saying that as servants of Allah we should be thankful for the bountiful opportunities that were given to us and therefore, we must be grateful for Allah’s endless blessings. Stories and anecdotes that were relayed in a relaxed and witty manner captured the crowd’s attention throughout the talk. Ustaz Haslin also quoted a few verses from the Holy Quran, which reminded us that in our journey to search for Allah’s mercy and to become a good servant, we cannot escape from being tested. Hence, during these trying times, Ustaz Haslin reminded us that we must seek refuge from Allah and pray for the strength to walk away from performing bad deeds. “Everything we do is based on our niat, or intentions, which is in your heart and also your will,” Ustaz Haslin said. On a more serious note, Ustaz Haslin explained that Allah SWT is the Most Merciful and the Most Forgiving, and He will forgive and bless His servants verily. Therefore, we should show our thanks to Allah by performing solat and act like a true Muslim. The points given by Ustaz Haslin in the Ceramah Perdana were good reminders, especially at the beginning of the new Hijri year, to align our resolution and motivate us in our quest to be a good servant of Allah SWT.

  • Malakoff Fosters English Language Proficiency in Mukim Serkat

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff Fosters English Language Proficiency in Mukim Serkat 11 December 2018 Malakoff Corporation Berhad held an educational series entitled, “English is Fun” on 10 and 28 November and 12 December 2018 at Masjid Al-Amin, Kampung Sungai Dinar, Mukim Serkat, Johor as part of its 2018 CSR Education Programme in Mukim Serkat that was launched in March this year. The programme, aimed to foster the usage of the English language among the local community by implementing an engaging and fun learning method, was led by five volunteers from Malakoff who acted as facilitators for the programme. The programme that attracted more than 50 participants was not limited only to students, as adults who looked to improve their English proficiency were also present. As the syllabus was designed according to the participants’ proficiency levels, it was imperative that the series be broken down into three sessions. The first session was meant to gauge the participants’ basic grammar knowledge and understanding of words by conducting activities such as the “Ice Breaker” and “What Am I?”. Each participant was asked to introduce themselves in English and were later placed in groups. The groups were later given a card each, containing a picture of an animal that they had to describe. Banter and laughter broke as each group worked on the task and gave their presentation to the rest of the class. The activities in the second session of the series were more focused on building the participants’ self-confidence in speaking the language despite their hesitation and limited comprehension. At the start of the class, the participants had to complete a word search where they had to look for a list of words in a ten-by-ten box puzzle. Tokens were given to the first ten correctly submitted answers. As a continuation of the conversational skills from the first session, the participants were given a set of dialogues on situations such as buying groceries, bumping into friends and telephone conversation to coach them on the correct use of words in these situations. As each pair stood up to converse, they were guided by the facilitators on their pronunciations and grammar, while the rest learnt by listening to their friends. As the series reached its finale, the class were given more listening and talking practices to increase their levels of confidence. The session started with “Broken Radio” that caused havoc as the groups competed to pass on a sentence from the first person to the last in line while ensuring that the sentence remains intact. Participants’ eagerness in completing this activity with success had certainly livened up the atmosphere and prepared them for the next activity. Next, working in pairs, the participants were given a list of topics to choose from and converse with their partner, guided by the facilitators. In this way, each of them would have the opportunity to talk and get feedback from the facilitators. As the last activity of the session, the groups were given a map each where they had to give directions on how to get from point A to point B. The level of teamwork and commitment displayed by the participants were truly inspiring as most groups managed to finish the task on time and carry out their presentation with confidence. Commenting on the programme, Ilhan Hafiy from Kampung Sungai Dinar said, “We hardly converse in English at home or in school mostly due to the fear of being laughed at for speaking in English. This programme made me feel less intimidated and I will certainly use the skills that I learnt here to speak in English more in the future.”

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff’s Prai Power Plant Wins NOSH Excellence Award 2017 15 November 2017 16 November 2017, Kuala Lumpur – Prai Power Plant (“PPP”), wholly-owned by Malakoff Corporation Berhad (“Malakoff”), today won the National Occupational Safety and Health (“NOSH”) Excellence Award 2017 for the Energy Facility category, from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (“DOSH”), under the Ministry of Human Resources, in a ceremony held at The Royale Chulan, Kuala Lumpur. The prestigious NOSH Excellence Award is a recognition at the national level for individuals, media, journalists and various organizations with excellent track records in its occupational health and safety practices at the workplace. The awards comprise 27 categories whereby shortlisted nominees from all over Malaysia underwent vigorous audits by DOSH before they were named winners in their respective categories. Ir. Mohd Raziff Embi, Plant Manager of PPP was humbled and honoured that the plant was selected as the winner this year. “I’m pleased to see that health and safety practices have become a second nature to the staff and that the efforts taken to uphold the best practices paid off. Besides applying it at work, they made it a habit to implement them everywhere they go, be it at the plant or at home.” PPP always strives to follow the guidelines set by DOSH and endeavours to perform one step higher than the stated guidelines to ensure that it covered all aspects and possibilities. At work, the morning meetings start with a briefing on health, safety and environment issues before proceeding to delegating tasks and addressing other arising matters. In addressing the safety concerns of staff at work, PPP has a 1 kilometer designated bicycle lane for staff from the Administration building to the process area. The roads surrounding the said areas were also made one-way for other vehicles to protect the safety of bicycle users. Another notable initiative taken by PPP to ensure the staff’s health is taken care of is by having a wellness center within its vicinity. The wellness center is equipped with blood pressure and glucose monitoring devices and staff are given wellness passport where they are able to self-check and monitor their health progress. It also acts as an initial check point if they noticed a drop in their health condition before proceeding to see a doctor for further examination. “This initiative enables the staff to be aware and interested in their own health. It also creates a support group where they encourage each other to lead a healthy lifestyle and avoid unhealthy habits such as smoking and having a sedentary lifestyle,” added Raziff. Commenting on winning the award, Chief Executive Officer of Malakoff, YBhg. Dato’ Ahmad Fuaad Kenali said, “This award is a recognition of our health and safety practices being implemented at our power plants. In addition to operating our power plants according to the industry’s standards and best practices, we have ensured health and safety best practices are well entrenched as part of our working culture.” “At Malakoff, we take health and safety matters very seriously. We hold various health and safety awareness programmes across the Group as an effort to continuously emphasize on its importance at the workplace. Such programmes have also brought our staff together and created a deep sense of belonging and camaraderie amongst staff when they are actively involved in these activities,” he added.

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff Contributes to Ease the Burden of the Mukim Serkat Community 10 March 2021 On 11 March 2021, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (“Malakoff”) donated RM21,300 from its Corporate ‘Wakalah Zakat’ Fund to the students of Kawasan 1, Mukim Serkat in Pontian, Johor as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (“CSR”) initiative. The handover ceremony was officiated by Tanjung Bin Power (“TBP”) Plant Manager, Encik Kopli Bin Yunus and the village chief of Mukim Serkat, Encik Zool Shuhaifi Bin Hassim at Masjid Al-Amin Kg Sg Dinar, while adhering to strict Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedures (“SOPs”). The aim of this initiative is to ease the burden of the parents in the form of school fees and other basic school necessities before the start of the school year. 184 students from two primary schools (SK Sungai Boh and SK Seri Sinaran Chokoh) and a secondary school (SMK Sri Kukup) will be benefiting from this donation. Encik Zool Shuhaifi expressed how grateful he was for Malakoff’s contribution to the community. “Last year has been an exceptionally challenging year for everyone, especially those with children due to the uncertainty of the current economy that has cost a lot of small businesses here, affecting their income and family expenses. Furthermore, the kids seem to have lost motivation to continue with school and commit to their education as some have not stepped foot in their school compound for almost a year”. “Hopefully, this contribution can serve as a morale boost for both the parents and the students to re-start their lives in this new norm”, he added. The Group’s CSR activities continue to be a cornerstone of its foundation for sustainable development, as we work closely with the local communities to ensure that their needs and well being are taken care of.
