  • Malakoff Channels RM100,000 To Rehabilitate Coral Reef

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff Channels RM100,000 To Rehabilitate Coral Reef 23 June 2012 The azure sky and crystal clear water of Tioman Island welcomed 60 participants to the Malakoff Coral Rehabilitation and Education Project, which benefited Tioman Island and its surrounding area. In its efforts to conserve the marine eco-system, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff) kick-started the project here recently, channelling RM100,000 for the development of coral nurseries here at Monkey Bay. The enthusiastic participants, consisted of Malakoff employees and business associates joined hands to rollout this programme over a period of three days. Jointly organised by Malakoff and its wholly owned subsidiary, Wirazone Sdn Bhd for the second consecutive time, the Coral Rehabilitation and Education Project is a key component of the Company’s Corporate Social Responsibility platform – the Malakoff Community Partnerships. The project saw the participation of the State’s Department of Marine Park Malaysia, along with Reef Check Malaysia, coral reef ecologists, Malakoff’s business associates including 7 companies (Al Rajhi Bank, Bank Kerjasama Rakyat Malaysia Berhad, Allianz General Insurance Company (M) Berhad, Asian Finance Bank Berhad, UAT Air Conditioning Sdn Bhd, Malaysia Building Society Berhad, Dinastia Jati Sdn Bhd, Al Rajhi Banking & Investment Corporation (M) Berhad) as well as the local community. Speaking about the event, Zainal Abidin Jalil, the Chief Executive Officer of Malakoff said, “In recognition of the important role that companies can play in environmental conservation, the Coral Rehabilitation and Education Project was initiated by Malakoff last year. Through this project, Malakoff believes that we will be able to play our part to take a step forward in restoring the balance of our ecosystem.” “I am pleased to say that today’s initiative is made possible by the involvement of Malakoff’s associates who share mutual respect for the environment, and are committed to educating the local communities on the importance of protecting it,” added Zainal. During the initiative, participants were split into groups of divers and non-divers. The non-divers worked onshore to construct the coral nurseries, while the divers worked underwater to collect coral fragments, known as ‘nubbins’, and housed them at the nurseries. The ‘nubbins’ at the coral nurseries are kept and nurtured for six months. During this period, the nurseries will be serviced twice a week to ensure healthy coral growth with monthly tracking to monitor the progress closely. At the end of the six months period, the corals will be replanted at selected reefs around the island to help revive the existing coral habitat. To further drive the message of safeguarding marine life to the people around the area, Malakoff also rolled out an educational programme to promote the coral nurseries to the local community as well as to the divers and snorkelling operators. In addition, Malakoff also encouraged the participation of local students for the nursery upkeep to instil respect as well as to spread awareness on the importance of coral reef to the eco-system. Expressing his heartfelt gratitude for the contribution from the various stakeholders, Zainal said, “Malakoff is immensely grateful for the helping hand provided by our business associates and the marine life experts to make our efforts in coral rehabilitation a success.” “The enthusiastic support we received from our business associates, local authorities, local communities as well as our employees to make this project a success serves as a true motivation for Malakoff to continue implementing such initiatives to help conserve our eco-system,” added Zainal. In addition to contributing towards environmental conservation, the coral rehabilitation initiative also helped forge new friendship among the participants and the local community as they worked hand-in-hand, demonstrating their commitment and support towards the cause. An avid environmentalist himself, Mr Nor Xyman Bakri of Azmi Dive Centre Sdn Bhd, was impressed with the marine conservation programme, which he admitted was very well thought out. He said, “Today, we surely made an impact in contributing to preserve the local marine life. Malakoff has done a commendable job in coming up with this initiative and implementing it so well. I am glad to be part of this initiative.” “Working together with various organisations proves that we are not alone in our concern for the ecosystem. It also makes working on these initiatives much more fun and exciting,” he added. In recognition for Malakoff’s unwavering commitment towards the environment, Malakoff was recently awarded the Habitat Preservation 2012 Award by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. More than 500 attendees from Mukim Serkat and Malakoff Corporation Berhad were present for the annual Maulidur Rasul celebration. Aimed at fostering community harmony and spirit through religious gatherings, this occasion was organized by Malakoff, in collaboration with JKKK Mukim Serkat. Also present were En. In view of this, a zakat contribution of RM40,000 was presented to the Chairman and Imam of Masjid Al-Amin, Tuan Haji Abdul Hafidz. Apart from the maintenance of the Masjid, the fund would also be utilised for religious classes and relevant community activities according to their 2019 calendar or ‘takwim’. Acknowledging the difficulty of the community or ‘kariah’ around the Masjid, Malakoff also handed over a hearse for their use. The hearse is a used van procured by Malakoff in May last year and modified to cater to its new function. Tuan Haji Abdul Hafidz expressed his gratitude towards this contribution as he felt it is timely and meaningful to the ‘kariah’. “Previously, we have had logistics problems in transporting ‘jenazah’ which caused a lot of inconveniences and not to mention, a heartbreak to the families of the deceased due to the delay in transporting the ‘jenazah’ to the cemetery as in Islam, it is encouraged to hasten the burial.” “We are grateful to Allah that our shortcomings are now finally addressed, thanks to the contribution from Malakoff”, he added. The Maulidur Rasul celebration then proceeded with a recitation of the Holy Quran by the local Qari, a ceramah on the values of Prophet Muhammad s.a.w by Ustaz Mohd Salehuddin Mohd Jaafar from Majlis Agama Islam Johor and concluded with a recitation of the Selawat by the audience.

  • Malakoff Accelerates Digitalisation Through Power BI

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff Accelerates Digitalisation Through Power BI 17 July 2022 In an effort to enhance digital competency, Malakoff Corporation Berhad (“Malakoff”), in partnership with Microsoft, held its annual Power BI Dashboard Challenge among Team Malakoff to broaden their data analytics skills and consequently be able produce adequate reports that can ultimately optimise the company’s performance. This initiative is in line with Sustainable Development Goal (“SDG”) 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure that aspires to foster innovation, build resilient infrastructure and promote sustainable industrialisation. The challenge was held from 21st March 2022 to 30th April 2022 where all participants were required to study the Power BI self-learning modules. 26 staff managed to complete the modules and 11 enrolled in the challenge, where seven out of the 11 that participated, were further shortlisted to present their dashboards to a panel of judges during the Power BI Dashboard Challenge Evaluation Day held on 15th June 2022. Upon careful and thorough deliberation, the top three winners for the challenge were selected and honoured during a prize giving ceremony that was held yesterday. The event was graced by Malakoff’s Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (“MD/CEO”) Encik Anwar Syahrin Abdul Ajib alongside representatives from Microsoft, Dr. Andrew Lau (Business Program Director) and Mr. Zeffree Kan (Account Executive). Encik Azlan Abd Malek from Local Generation Division (“LGD”) successfully completed the challenge and was declared the Champion. Encik Eizaaz Zakaria from O&M Commercial and Cik Nadzifah Amirah Syazwani Samsudin from Solar Department won the first runner-up and second runner-up spots, respectively. Commenting on the Group’s collaboration with Microsoft on this initiative, Encik Anwar emphasised on the importance of embedding digitalisation into Malakoff’s systems and processes to gather accurate data for improvements. “Digitalisation is the way forward. We are looking at how can we utilise data to further enhance our business processes and operations. With enough expertise and knowledge, perhaps we can integrate Artificial Intelligence (“AI”) into the monitoring systems in our power plants to track the amount of carbon emission. Simultaneously, we can leverage the same modelling to figure out the most effective, efficient and feasible ways to reduce our carbon emission”. “Digitalisation can also open up opportunities for Team Malakoff to expand their technical skills and knowledge in ways they had never explored before. I am truly humbled and honoured to represent Malakoff in pushing this initiative forward with Microsoft. I also wish to thank the Digital Team for making this happen”, adds Anwar Syahrin. This initiative is part of Malakoff’s continuous efforts in enhancing its business operations to align with the UN SDGs. Apart from establishing relevant partnerships, such initiative can also promote efficient work culture as the company strives to create innovative and sustainable solutions to better lives.

  • Reading Made Accessible – Malakoff Launches a Mini Library in Mukim Serkat

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Reading Made Accessible – Malakoff Launches a Mini Library in Mukim Serkat 17 November 2018 On 18 November 2018, Malakoff Corporation Berhad launched a Mini Library aimed to cultivate a reading culture within the local community especially among the younger generation, at Kompleks Penghulu Mukim Serkat, Pontian, Johor. This initiative is part of Malakoff’s 2018 CSR Education Programme in Mukim Serkat that started in March this year with “Jom Sarap”, a free breakfast programme for seven primary schools in the area. The Mini Library is not just a sole effort by the Company as the staff also played a part through a book donation drive that was performed across the Company where staff donated their much-loved books for the cause. Approximately 300 books from all genres were collected and then brought to the Mini Library to be tagged and arranged in racks provided by Malakoff. Present during the event were Mukim Serkat’s Penghulu, En. Roslan Bokari, local community heads, representatives from Malakoff, 40 kindergarten students from Tabika Sungai Kuali and Tabika Sungai Durian and their parents. The fun-filled day commenced with a colouring contest before proceeding to the highlight of the event, which was a story book recitation by Ustazah Narimah Suratman, a regular volunteer at the Kompleks Penghulu. Ustazah Narimah’s animated and unique approach at reciting kept her audience completely immersed and excited, effortlessly making them feel at ease to ask questions and be more engaging throughout the session. This could hopefully inspire the students to regard reading as a fun way to improve their language proficiency and simultaneously expand their knowledge. “This Mini Library is very useful to us as we would often bring our children here on weekends to search for resources for their school assignments, and this subsequently encouraged them to fill their free time by reading books”, said one of the parents, Puan Suraya binti Md Ali. Some of the students also expressed their appreciation towards this initiative as they can now have a proper designated place to read their favourite story books and do their revision. The event ended with a prize-giving ceremony to students with the most creative colouring pieces.
