  • Malakoff Wins National Occupational Safety and Health Excellence Award

Sharing important news and updates for you and the community Back Malakoff Wins National Occupational Safety and Health Excellence Award 17 December 2014 Best Practices in Health and Safety that Benefits Plant and Staff Proven to be the Winning Factor for Port Dickson Power Plant Port Dickson Power Plant (PDPP), owned by Malakoff Corporation Berhad (Malakoff), won the National Occupational Safety and Health Excellence Award 2014, from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), under the Ministry of Human Resources, in a ceremony held yesterday at Marriott Hotel, Putrajaya. Speaking on winning the award, Chief Executive Officer of Malakoff, Dato’ Sri Syed Faisal Albar said, “Malakoff is honoured to receive this award as a recognition of our health and safety practices at our power plants. We have been operating our power plants according to the best practices in the industry and we strive to ensure that our staff also benefit by organizing health and safety programmes.” Mr Sankar MK Samy, Plant Manager of PDPP was pleased that the plant was selected as the winner this year. “Vigorous audits were done by DOSH across the country to determine the winner of the award. I’m proud to say that it was our in-house health programme involving our staff that gave us the winning edge against other finalists,” he said. Started more than ten years ago, the health programme at PDPP has evolved to suit the working lifestyle of the staff. Understanding the importance of a healthy workforce, the staff is allocated to exercise for an hour before the end of the working day, twice a week. During this period, staff are free to choose their activities, such as walking, running, or playing badminton, in the vicinity of the plant. The first aid room at PDPP is also converted to a wellness centre, equipped with a BMI measuring device, blood pressure and sugar level monitors, where each staff are given a health passport to encourage them to keep track of their own health condition. “The most notable achievement of this programme is that it empowers the staff to be responsible of their own health. The programme creates an environment to support health, including a ‘No Smoking’ support group for those who intend to stop the habit,” added Sankar. “The health programme at PDPP is just another example of various programmes organized in Malakoff to encourage staff to adopt a healthy lifestyle. Such programme brings the workforce together as it creates a sense of belonging and camaraderie amongst staff when they are involved in the activities,” concluded Syed Faisal.
